Four Immeasurable Virtues / Four Great Attitudes / Four Keys to Mental Peace
By carrying these four keys (friendliness, compassion, delight, equanimity) at all times, we can always open a door whenever we find a mental barrier or lock, moving ourselves from a state of agitation and anxiety to a state of peaceful contentment.
A serene and peaceful mind is cultivated by being friendly towards happiness in others, compassionate towards those who are suffering, delighted and inspired by the virtuous, and remaining calm and balanced in action when faced with unrighteousness.
Amity ~ Charity ~ Felicity ~ Equanimity
Amity - The cooperative and supportive relationship between persons, peoples, nations, or animals. In this sense, the term connotes a relationship which involves mutual knowledge, esteem, affection and respect along with a degree of rendering service to friends in times of need or crisis.
Charity - Providing material, spiritual or emotional support to those in need. The act of giving. Benevolence to the less fortunate. An attitude of kindness and understanding towards others, especially suggesting generosity.
Felicity - The condition of intense happiness, beatitude, bliss, euphoria, joie de vivre, joy, mirth, rapture. An apt and pleasing style in speech, writing, choice of words etc. Good luck; success, good fortune, fortuity
Equanimity - The state of being calm, even-minded, stable and composed, especially under duress.
